Decanter Bay, approximately an hour’s drive
from the outskirts of Christchurch, is a small semi- isolated
bay on
the northern side of Banks Peninsula, 5 minutes to the north
of Little Akaloa. These bays are known as the Eastern Bays.
The
bay faces north and is open to the sea which gives it many
moods from large swells and waves to gentle calm.

The feature that sets the bay apart from other
bays is the outcrop of rock pinnacles that jut out into the
sea off the headland. They are known as the ‘Decanter
Rocks’ because one of the rocks closely resembles a whisky
or sherry decanter. Many people believe Decanter Bay is the
most picturesque of the Banks Peninsula bays.
Akaroa, Banks Peninsula’s best known tourist town with
shops and restaurants is 35 minutes drive from Decanter Bay.
There are four dwellings in the bay, one being
the bach and one being the residence of your hosts, Steve and
Kylie Harris. The surrounding land is rural farmland.
